The Area Community Theater of Sharpsville (ACTS) will be hosting a slew of summer programs for students and adults at their new location, the former Sacred Heart Church in downtown Sharon.

The first offer is a Student Vocal Academy and Showcase for high school students, being directed by Joe Spurio, assistant conductor of the Shenango Valley Chorale. It is a six-week course starting on June 14, and the deadline to register is next Tuesday, June 7. The cost is $100 with scholarships available to help cover costs. The course includes six half hour one-on-one voice lessons, rehearsals and masterclasses, and will end in a showcase of all participants.

“This class is great to get one-on-one experience with a vocal coach to work on technique basics, but great to learn how to sing in a group with the master classes,” Susan Piccirilli, Vice-President of the Board of Directors for ACTS, said. “We hope to double or triple our turnout this year as we continue to get out of this pandemic.”

Another option is the Young Adult Summer Acting Workshop for high school students, directed by AJ Sanaonetti, actor and director pursuing a B.A. in theater at Slippery Rock University. College freshmen and sophomores are also welcome. Also being a six-week course at $100, there will be scholarships offered to cover costs. The program will start July 6 and be held Wednesdays from 4-6 p.m. and focus on gaming a better understanding of monologues, characters, moments, and students as actors.

“This is the first acting workshop that we are hosting, which is very exciting,” Piccirilli said. “We’re going to teach how to perform monologues, work on face movement and placement and work on things based on student interest. We hope to even host maybe some one act plays at the end of the workshop as the students become more comfortable and confident in their skills.”

For younger students, grades 1-6, a one-week Arts Adventure Camp is being held for $50, directed by Tina Grieg and Trisha Coates. Students will explore performing and visual arts through a variety of mediums including movement, singing, theater, drumming, painting, drawing and designing. All art materials, snacks and drinks will be provided. Two sessions are available. The first is June 27 through July 1, with the deadline to register being June 20. Week two is August 1 through 5, needing to be registered by July 20. Both camps, which will host the same activities, will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

ACTS is also hosting a slew of events throughout the summer including an open mic night, a performance of American songs, and shows from guest performers and local musicians. This Saturday “From Broadway to Hollywood featuring Ally Grande” will be held at 7:30 p.m., with doors opening at 7. Special performers include Leah Benson, Ricky Hale and Justin Stanek. Tickets are 10 dollars for adults and five for students, which are available online, at the door or by calling the box office at 724-815-4388.
