This is a pilot project that Audi is running in the German city of Nuremberg and is infact open to EV owners from any brand
2021 has been a landmark year for the EV space within the Auto industry with a slew of new electric cars hitting the market
One of the biggest challenges to a seamless EV experience still remains range anxiety and charging infrastructure
One way that brands can distinguish themselves from the competition is by the charging experience they offer. Audi recently showcase a pilot project of their charging hub in the German city of Nuremberg
This facility will allow customers an alternative to charging at home. It will offer fast charging to e-Tron owners, which should take just 20 to 30 minutes
At the heart of the Audi charging hubs, are these container cubes that feature used and processed lithium-ion batteries that act as energy storage systems. The batteries are sourced from Audi development vehicles
These cubes can be assembled and disassembled and stacked next to each other and draw very little power from the grid. It has a total storage capacity of 2.45 MWh
Each cube can power two fast chargers and the entire facility can charge up to 80 vehicles per day
A lounge is built around these cubes for customers to wait till they juice up their cars. Some energy (30kw) comes from the additional solar panels installed on the roof
Here's what the real building looks like
You can reserve a spot for yourself using the Audi app and then head to the charging hub. Once there, you can plug it in and you don't even require a dedicated RFID car at two of the sic charging points, which is a nice touch for this pilot phase
This will however require an e-Tron charging contract
While your Audi is being juiced up, you too can head to the Audi lounge and chill there
The ambiance is every bit Audi with an ultra-modern minimalist theme throughout the lounge
Other services like food and beverage, electric bikes are also available at this facility
Fancy a test drive of one of the latest EV models from Ingolstadt? Not a problem
Audi has you covered as you could try your hand and take one of their latest models. a quick spin
Now through this pilot project that is open 24x7, Audi wants to gauge customer interactions and determine what time of day is the hub at its busiest
And the best part is that Audi really wants to democratize the concept as this facility isn't reserved just for Audis. Drivers who own other EV's are also free to use this facility and charging infrastructure
This would be perfect as the German brand not only gets to showcase its charging experience and infrastructure, but potential customers can also check out their latest EVs with those test drives that Audi offers
