Manitowoc Crane Company launched the Potain MDT 489 roofless crane, designed to fill the gap between the manufacturer’s popular MDT 389 and the new MDT 569 model, ideal for large-scale construction and infrastructure projects

MDT 489 offers high capacity, with a maximum load of 22 USt (20 t) or 27.6 USt (25 t) and a 262-foot (80 m) boom, which can provide a wide range of coverage and scope at the job site-while providing cost Save the advantages of easy transportation and quick assembly and disassembly.

In addition, its compact crane configuration allows it to work on narrow and crowded sites. MDT 489 is designed for high performance while retaining the concept of using topless technology. Unlike hammerhead tower crane models, these technologies overlap with multiple cranes on the construction site and avoid collisions.

Designed for extremely compact transportation

Except for the slewing mechanism, all components can be transported in standard size containers. The rotating part of the MDT 489 can be transported in just nine containers. This is four to five fewer than a typical crane of this size would require, reducing transportation costs and complexity, and making it easier to enter the construction site. Protective packaging with brackets helps to secure the boom parts, and cushions in the container protect these parts while promoting efficient packaging.

Unparalleled assembly speed among similar products

When MDT 489 arrived at the job site, its assembly speed was twice that of other cranes of similar size. Using a 262-foot (80-meter) boom and a 164-foot (50-meter) mast, assembly takes up to two days and requires very little space.

The MDT 489 can be placed on a 19.6 ft (6 m) or 26.2 ft (8 m) cross-base platform and assembled in various configurations to make the best use of the space and equipment available on site. The cantilever is designed for easy and efficient installation with built-in sling points. Depending on the size of the auxiliary crane and the available ground space, the boom can be assembled into different configurations to provide flexibility on the job site. The heaviest part of the cantilever weighs only 7.39 US tons (6.7 tons). The rotating cab and the well-thought-out anti-arm connection point design are also easy to install.

The latest Potain technology maximizes performance

Using Manitowoc's Crane Control System (CCS), MDT 489 can be set up in 15 minutes. In addition, this function promotes highly controlled and efficient operation of the crane throughout the entire time on the job site. The trolley provides two lowering devices for fast load cycle lifting or four lowering devices for heavy lifting. The wire rope of the trolley can be tensioned, and then the sensor can be recalibrated by simply using the button in the cab. This is ideal for long-term construction sites that require more frequent tensioning. Once the MDT 489 has completed work on the site, it can be quickly and easily disassembled, ready to make way for other cranes or continue to the next job.

Customers can choose the new high-performance 110 HPL winch or 150 HPL. (132 HPL and 180 HPL can be used in the North American market). The productivity of the new 110 HPL winch is significantly improved because the lifting speed is twice that of the old 100 LVF winch. This feature, combined with new motor brake management and a new architecture that facilitates maintenance operations, means that the 110 HPL winch can speed up construction time, improve overall driving comfort, and provide more precise load placement.

The Potain MDT 489 flat-top crane has the most highly optimized 450 metric ton crane assembly and disassembly process, which helps to save costs while enjoying the benefits of a large-capacity crane. It combines the capabilities required for large construction projects with a compact crane configuration suitable for the most compact and crowded worksites, allowing contractors to access more worksites and complete their work efficiently and profitably.
